Initial Insights on Blogging
Blogging has quickly become far more than chronologically updated text on a site, and has vastly evolved into a platform that can be used for a variety of different reasons, many of which have only recently been realised.
Professionally, a blog can be used for networking, for displaying previous work and experience, sharing insights, consolidating your online identity (and subsequently managing it), and setting yourself apart from any applicant for any job ever that doesn’t have a strong web presence that a well-managed blog can provide. The worldwide reach of a blog is unsurpassed, the careful development and maintenance of which is a wise career move for any individual, especially one that seeks a career in an information technology related industry.
Personally, a blog can be used for another variety of reasons. It can serve as a tool for organisation, motivation, and introspection. The two-way nature of communication through blogging brings unsurpassed value in the ability to inspire and influence others. Unlike other forms of communication, blogs are not restricted by constraints of time, where communication builds around topics rather than ebbs and flows as in other mediums, allowing writers to truly make a long-lasting impact on the internet, and therefore upon the world.
The blogging journey of Sacha Chua is an excellent example of the range of purposes of blogging as a platform. Originally, she started a blog for the purpose of recording her own goals and having those around her read her goals as a form of motivation to complete them. Now, her blog is far more fleshed out and covers an enormous scope of her life. It is clear though that the value in her blog lies in a few key areas:
- Value through expert advice.
Lines about personal branding such as “Don’t worry about being findable. Focus on being worth finding” and “you don’t have to be an expert to create value” when combined with her experienced and logical reasoning serve as tangible advice in areas (Web and Enterprise 2.0) that are new and still a learning experience for bloggers and social media contributors alike.
- Inspiration through a positive and enthusiastic attitude
It is very clear that the key to good blog writing is staying positive, as extensive negative opinions are not only boring to read, they also do not add value to a blog like positive writing does that serves to inspire a community. I would argue that it is the inspiration that Sacha has introduced into her blog that has allowed it to become so successful today.
- Integration with social media
A key strategy in fostering a community is extending the reach of the blog further than the blog itself. Augmenting the blog with other extras such as a twitter feed or involvement in contribution based social media (such as digg or stumbleupon) serve to introduce new members to the community, encourage participation, and retain them through repeated and periodic reaches into other areas of the internet also inhabited by members of the same community.
Andrew McAfee has been credited as coining the word Enterprise 2.0, so it would be fitting that his blog was included. Unlike Sacha’s blog, it does not provide the number of subscribers so it is hard to judge the tangible success of the blog, however reading the blog provides an enormous level of insight from a well-read author who periodically quotes and discusses a variety of other sources, drawing value from multiple areas rather than purely providing the insight from a single author.
TechCrunch is far removed from the realm of blogs I’ve just discussed, as it is primarily an editorial-based news blog, however it demonstrates the level of value in providing the latest up-to-date information (to the point of being able to build one of the most successful blogs ever and monetize news blogging).
The O’Reilly Radar provides some of the most authoritative blogging on the subject of Web 2.0. It’s value is in it’s established expert knowledge, and serves to demonstrate how becoming an expert in a particular area can be all that’s required to foster a successful community by being the go-to source of information.
